April Wood Suppliers Cleared Natural Forest
Forest clearance in violation of government spatial planning law and within Indonesia’s “deforestation moratorium area”
- APRIL wood suppliers cleared natural forests inside a “national protection area” in violation of government regulation 26 year 2008 on National Spatial Plan.
- APRIL wood suppliers cleared land inside a “moratorium area” declared by Minister of Forestry Decree number 323/MenhutII/2011 dated 17 June 2011 on “Determining Indicative Map on Postponement for Granting New Licenses for Forest Utilization, Forest Area Utilization and Conversion of Forest Area and Other Uses.”
- Based on information published by Tempo Magazine, the Indonesian Ministry of Environment plans a civil suit against 14 companies for allegedly causing environmental destruction, including 6 wood suppliers to APRIL
- PT SRL tried to obtain SVLK in May 2911 but was rejected. They then filed for a reassessment excluding the block that did not pass. EoF concludes APRIL pulp production could therefore be tainted by illegal supplies from an area Government of Indonesia refused to certify
APRIL: These accusations are categorically untrue. APRIL complies with all legal and regulatory requirements in our operations and in our application for forest concession licenses. APRIL does not source wood from high conservation value areas or from areas designated by the government as being off-limits. Our supply partners have the same commitment.
Our entire forestry and manufacturing operations are certified under international legality standards (Bureau Veritas Legal Origin of Timber), which assures that all wood that comes into our mill is from legal sources.
Our manufacturing operations are PEFC Chain-of-Custody certified – testament to the fact that a rigorous verification and traceability system is in place.
Our forestry and mill operations are also certified under the national SVLK-PHPL Timber Legality Certification standard.
